A glimpse into the family life of duke BorsoOur
readers will certainly feel an intoxicating amiability oozing out of this
charming picture from the court of Ferrara. Duke Borso - ever so serene,
so benign - is seen amidst his loved ones, including his pet owl, perched
on his head and watching the Estes having their supper, and his valiant dog,
the faithful companion on countless hunting trips, now protecting his
master from the turmoils of the world
outside. Standing at the table we see Borso's sister and lady Este serving some
vintage wine to their hero and husband; close to them a sympathetic
black slave is proudly presenting a fresh egg (laid by the owl?); in the
right foreground Borso's angelic daughter - always willing to help - is
assisting the duke's dear old father to have dessert, and in the
background the sweet mother of our noble duke is smoking a long pipe
after a delicious meal. On the left side of this haven of peace the
august master of ceremonies is reclining against his baton and for some
reason reaching his hand straight into Borso's pocket. |
